San Francisco Supervisor Ed Jew returned from his trip to China on Sunday and vowed not to resign in the face of an FBI criminal investigation and a separate city attorney probe into whether he actually lives in the district he represents.

Jew penned a column in the June issue of the Sunset Beacon newspaper "to clear the air" in which he said he will not step down from his District 4 seat. "I have no intention of resigning my office," he wrote.

Jew was not in his City Hall office this morning and his legislative aide, Barabara Meskunas, said he was home sleeping.

Jew’s lawyers are scheduled to meet today "to coordinate the response" to City Attorney Dennis Herrera’s inquiry into Jew’s residency, Meskunas said. Jew has until Friday to respond to Herrera’s request for documents that prove the rookie supervisor lives in the 28th Avenue home he claims is his primary residence.

Jew, who took office in December, is the subject of an FBI investigation looking into a $40,000 cash payment Jew said he received from businessmen in his district who were having problems with the city permitting process.

The supervisor left for China on May 23, the week after federal investigators raided his City Hall office, residential properties linked to him and the Chinatown flower shop he operates.

Questions about whether Jew meets the city’s residency requirements to hold his board seat surfaced in the wake of the federal investigation. Neighbors of a house on 28th Avenue that Jew claims as his primary residence -- and that was searched by the FBI -- have said the property has been vacant for years. Utility records show there has been little to no water use since he claimed to have moved into the home prior to running for office last year.

But in the column he wrote in the Sunset Beacon, the supervisor said "we now live on 28th Avenue in a house owned by my father."

He said his family does not live in a Burlingame home federal investigators searched, and that the residence "serves as a gathering place for (his wife’s) side of our family on weekends and holidays."

"I believe in our country’s system of laws and know that the truth will come out about all of the matters you’ve read about in the papers recently," Jew wrote.
